Not on its own: in a chat, Claude doesn't download, cut or render video. It can drive a tool that does. Add ClipEmber as a custom connector in Claude (Customize → Connectors, URL https://clipember.com/api/mcp), sign in, and ask for clips from a YouTube link. Across 156 runs since 11 October 2026, the median run took 4.6 minutes and returned 5 captioned vertical clips.
In a normal chat Claude works with text and images. It doesn't fetch a YouTube video, transcribe an hour of audio or render a 1080×1920 MP4. What it can do is call tools. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard for that: a remote MCP server is a set of tools Claude can use once you connect it.
ClipEmber's server gives Claude the same actions as our dashboard: start a clipping run from a link, check its progress, list the finished clips with their scores, hooks and download links, schedule posts to the accounts you connected, and review Autopilot's proposals. Claude sees what those calls return, such as titles, scores and links, not the video file itself.
Each tool is marked as read-only or not, so a client can ask you before it runs one that creates or changes something.
| Measured | Source | |
|---|---|---|
| Tools the server exposes | 31 | tools registered in our MCP server code, 19 October 2026 |
| Tools that only read | 18 | readOnlyHint annotation on each tool, same date |
| Tools that create or change something | 13 | same count: start or delete a run, schedule, move or cancel a post, approve a proposal, account settings |
In Claude, open Customize → Connectors, click + Add, then Add custom connector. Name it ClipEmber and paste https://clipember.com/api/mcp as the server URL.
Claude then asks how to sign in. ClipEmber uses OAuth: you are sent to clipember.com, sign in or create an account, and approve access on a consent screen. There is no API key to copy. If Claude asks how it should register itself with the server, choose to register automatically: our server supports dynamic client registration.
On Claude's free plan you can add one custom connector, according to Anthropic's help page. In Claude Code the same connection is one command: claude mcp add --transport http clipember https://clipember.com/api/mcp.
ChatGPT can use the same URL as a custom connector in developer mode. Which ChatGPT plans allow that, and where the switch sits, changed several times during 2026, so check OpenAI's help center for the current path.
"Make clips from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=…, the first 20 minutes, clips under 60 seconds." Claude starts a run. It uses one credit, and one run covers a window of up to 20 minutes of the video.
"Is it done?" A run is rarely finished within the same reply, so ask again a few minutes later. The tool itself tells Claude not to check every few seconds.
"Show me the clips with their scores and download links." You get each clip's title, hook, score and a link. The score is our estimate of how well a clip opens, not a forecast of views.
"Schedule the top one to TikTok tomorrow at 6 pm." This works if TikTok is connected in your ClipEmber account and your plan includes posting (Creator and up, or the 7-day Pro trial). If it isn't connected, Claude gets a message saying so instead of queueing a post that would fail later.
These are completed runs from our production database created between 11 and 19 October 2026, measured from the moment a run was created to the moment its last clip finished rendering. They include runs started from the dashboard, the API and AI agents; the pipeline is the same for all of them.
The slow tail is mostly runs waiting behind others in the queue and long source downloads. Our guide to how long AI clipping takes breaks the time down by stage.
| Measured | Source | |
|---|---|---|
| Completed runs in the sample | 156 | requests created 11–19 Oct 2026 with status completed, production database |
| Median time to rendered clips | 4.6 min | same sample: run created → last render job finished |
| 90th percentile | 14.8 min | same sample |
| Clips per run, median | 5 | same sample: rendered clips per run |
Every run uses a credit from your ClipEmber plan. The free plan has 5 a month, and its downloads carry a watermark.
Editing a clip, such as trimming it by clicking words or changing the caption style, happens in the ClipEmber editor. Through Claude you start runs, read results, schedule posts and review Autopilot.
TikTok, YouTube and Instagram accounts are connected inside ClipEmber, not through Claude.
Only clip videos you have the right to use. For other people's videos, read our guide to Creative Commons on YouTube first.
Yes. Anthropic's help page says free users can add one custom connector, and ClipEmber's OAuth connection works on every ClipEmber plan, including Free.
Claude sees what the tools return: titles, scores, hooks, status and links. The video is downloaded, processed and stored by ClipEmber; it isn't sent into the chat.
Yes, for clients without OAuth: create a key in the ClipEmber dashboard and send it in the X-API-Key header. Issuing new keys needs Pro or Agency, or the 7-day trial.
5 free videos every month, no card required.
