Why can my app only post to TikTok privately? What the Direct Post audit checks

Until TikTok audits an app's Content Posting API integration, Direct Post only works on private accounts and every post is limited to private viewing; we saw the error unaudited_client_can_only_post_to_private_accounts 18 times. The audit checks the posting screen and the content the app sends. Ours was rejected twice without a stated reason and approved on 9 October 2026.

What an unaudited app can do

TikTok's Content Posting API has two paths. Upload sends the video to the creator's TikTok inbox, where they finish and post it themselves. Direct Post publishes straight to their profile, and publicly only after TikTok has audited the app.

Before the audit, TikTok's guidelines limit Direct Post to private viewing (SELF_ONLY), to accounts that are private when the post is made, and to 5 users in 24 hours. Ask for any other privacy level and the request fails; in our logs the error is unaudited_client_can_only_post_to_private_accounts.

Audited or not, TikTok caps how often one creator account can post through Direct Post: roughly 15 posts a day, shared across every app the creator uses.

What the posting screen must show

The creator's nickname, fetched from TikTok when the screen opens, so it is clear which account receives the post. If TikTok says the creator can't post right now, the app has to stop and ask them to try later.

An editable caption. Any preset text, hashtags included, must be editable.

A privacy choice with nothing preselected, using only the options TikTok returns for that creator.

Comment, Duet and Stitch toggles that start switched off and stay off until the creator turns them on; the ones a creator disabled in TikTok are greyed out.

A commercial content disclosure with Your brand and Branded content options, which starts switched off. Branded content can't be private.

The line "By posting, you agree to TikTok's Music Usage Confirmation" before the publish button, a preview of the video, and a note that processing can take a few minutes.

And in the video itself: no brand names, logos, watermarks, promotional text or links.

Our timeline

Both rejections only said to adjust the app according to the Content Sharing Guidelines, and the review comments were empty. Our posting screen already had every element listed above, so we looked at what the app had actually sent to TikTok.

What we changed between rejections

Check creator info before every post, not only when the screen opens. Scheduled posts went out later without asking TikTok whether the creator could post at that moment. Now each post asks first and stops if the answer is no.

Treat spam_risk_too_many_pending_share as "not now". TikTok returns it from the upload endpoints when too many earlier uploads are still waiting, unfinished, in the creator's inbox. Retrying at once doesn't help; finishing or deleting those inbox items does. We now move such a post 90 minutes later, up to 6 times, instead of failing it.

Send the caption the creator approved. The caption TikTok receives is the one edited on the posting screen, and an empty caption doesn't start a Direct Post.

If you're a creator, not a developer

If a scheduling app's TikTok posts land in your inbox as drafts, the app is using Upload or isn't audited for Direct Post. If they go out as private, the app is probably unaudited, or a private option was picked. Our guide to TikTok drafts covers the inbox side.

FAQ

How long does the TikTok Direct Post audit take?

TikTok doesn't publish a target time. For us it took from August to 9 October 2026, with two rejections in between.

Can an unaudited app post publicly if I make my account public?

No. Unaudited Direct Post needs the account to be private when the post is made and limits it to private viewing. You can make the post public yourself afterwards in TikTok.

Why did TikTok reject without a reason?

The Direct Post audit rejections we received named no reason, and the portal's review comments were empty. Comparing what the app actually sent with the Content Sharing Guidelines is the practical way to find the problem.
